In 1989 author Stephen R. Covey published one of the most popular business management books of all time; The Seven Habits of Highly effective People, now available in pdf. This book sold over 25 million copies and has been published in 38 languages. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People encompass what Covey named true north principles of character. Take responsibility for your life. The decisions you make determine how effective you are in your life. Take responsibility for the choices that you make and whatever consequences follow.
Think of the End when you Start
Identify your important character values and life goals. Use these to create a self mission statement. Think about the characteristics needed in each of your roles and relationships in life.
Prioritize your life based upon what is important and not on what is urgent. Your efforts should bring out your desired values in character move you closer to meeting your goals and serve the roles and relationships you defined in the previous step.
Strive for Win-Win Situations
In your relationships you should make it your goal to seek mutually beneficial solutions. Understand that a win for all is the best long term solution.
Understand First then be Understood
Listen first and strive to understand other people. When you do this others will be compelled to reciprocate the favor and be open-minded. When they are open-minded they are more easily influenced.
When the strengths of many combine through teamwork many goals can be achieved that one person alone could not have accomplished.
Work on Yourself
In addition to the previous steps people should work on their mind body and spirit in order to be well-balanced beings. Physical exercise reading and prayer or meditation can help one be well-balanced.
